Ever since she burst onto the competition circuit in 2015, Crossfit champion Sara Sigmundsdóttir has been redefining speed, strength, and athleticism for a generation of fans and athletes alike. Through her trademark combination of intense focus and genuine lightheartedness, Sara has emerged as a role model for athletes of different backgrounds, regardless of gender.
Growing up in Iceland, Sara didn’t want to play with the neighborhood kids because she was stronger than the boys, and they would make fun of her because of it. While the other kids enjoyed playing soccer, swimming or dancing, Sara struggled to find an activity she loved. Things began to change when she attended a local fitness boot camp class in high school where the coach complimented her strength. "It changed my life," she says. “I had found something I could shine in, and it was the gym.”
Sara first made a name for herself in 2015 when she won the 2015 Meridian Regional, outperforming several reigning champions. In her debut Crossfit Games appearance that year, Sara shocked established competitors when she finished on the podium in third. Seven top five competition finishes and another third place podium finish in 2016 proved her previous performance was no fluke and that Sara was an elite athlete to be reckoned with. 2017 and 2018 saw Sara’s resilience tested as she was forced to deal with a string of freak injuries, including a gritty performance in 2018 where she persevered through two days of competition with a painful rib injury. The road back to the top hasn’t been easy with an up and down competition year in 2019. 2020 has been a steady rise for Sara as a new training regimen has enabled her to demonstrate a well-rounded skill set, and she continues to surprise the competition with her inner resolve to continue challenging herself.
Sara is known for her buoyant personality and strong sense of integrity. She remains a crowd favorite at every competition she participates in, garnering massive cheers from her legion of fans worldwide and serving as an inspiration to girls and women everywhere she goes. Sara fully embraces being a role model, taking the responsibility seriously, saying: “I definitely want other girls to understand it’s OK to be strong… That’s my why. It’s why I do this.”
Sara continues to compete professionally and trains out of her own personal gym in Reykjanesbaer, Iceland where she resides. Champions + Legends is proud to welcome Sara as one of our Athlete Partners and we look forward to supporting her as she continues to break down barriers in pursuit of being crowned the Fittest Woman on Earth.
