What Is CBD Tincture and How Can It Help You?

Although CBD seems relatively new, throughout time, people all over the world have been using it in one way or another. CBD was used to provide a calming effect to people in the ancient world. As time passed, an almost infinite number of formulations emerged – from oils, lotions, and capsules to tinctures, each promising an even more active dose of CBD than the last.

Among the various formulations, tinctures are the most widely used, mainly because of how they are administered, a few drops at a time, usually under the tongue. Before we dive deep into tinctures and their benefits, let’s understand what CBD is in the first place.

What is CBD?

As you might already know, there are a hundred chemical compounds in the hemp plant. Two of them are well known; THC, the notorious compound that produces a euphoric effect or “high” commonly experienced after consuming marijuana. The other; CBD, a compound also known as a cannabidiol, which has anti-seizure, anti-inflammatory and anxiety-relieving properties. People looking to reap the full benefits of the hemp plant without getting high can take advantage of different CBD supplements such as capsules, balms and tinctures.

What are tinctures?

A tincture is traditionally made by using a mixture of water and alcohol to extract particular compounds in the form of oil from a plant and in this case, the hemp plant. C+L CBD oil is then mixed with  MCT oil (aka carrier oil) which also has been associated health benefits. The reason CBD oil and MCT oil are mixed together is to allow the tincture be less viscous (thick) and allow it to be drawn into the dropper. NOTE: some tinctures available in the market are mixed with lower quality carrier oils such as olive oil or grapeseed oil.

How should you start using CBD tinctures?

If you’re using CBD tincture for the first time, a good way to introduce it into your routine is to consume it an hour before going to bed as it’s known for providing a soothing effect. Once the body becomes familiar with the tincture, you can easily use it more freely during the day. It’s best to take a CBD tincture dose after a high-fat snack like almonds and peanuts to increase its absorption rate into your body.

You can consult your doctor before using the CBD tincture, if you have pre-existing health conditions and are taking other medications during the day. If you are concerned about what effect CBD will have on you when taken with other medications, it’s better to talk to your doctor before you start taking it.

You should take the minimum amount of CBD tincture suggested by your doctor. After a few days, you’ll find out the dose which works for you. This could take some time. Remember that finding your way with CBD tincture is a process and not a button you can push.

How to take CBD tinctures

Due to its intense concentration, CBD tinctures are meant to be taken in small doses. This is why most CBD tinctures come with a built-in dropper that allows users to measure the doses carefully. Given how easy CBD liquids and tinctures are to use, they are among the most commonly-used CBD products. You can also take CBD tinctures in different ways. Below are the most common and popular forms of taking CBD tinctures.

Under the tongue

Tinctures were originally made to be ingested sublingually, meaning using a dropper to place the tincture under your tongue. There are several blood vessels under your tongue which allow CBD to enter your bloodstream directly. Once you’ve dropped the liquid under your tongue, hold it for about 1-2 minutes and then gently swallow. The residual CBD that you've ingested will then get absorbed in your body through the digestive system.

Swallowed

Some people take CBD tinctures by swallowing it. But the downside to that is that the CBD will probably pass through your digestive tract before it gets absorbed in the bloodstream, taking a bit longer than it would under the tongue.

Mixed or blended

It’s no secret that CBD has found its way into many edibles and drinks. You can easily add CBD to your morning shakes, coffee, tea or soups. You can also use pre-workout tincture oil in your pre-workout beverage before working out.
